Formed in 1928
for young men who wished to continue their Scouting whilst
beginning their working life at sea, The Deep Sea Scouts was
formed as a new Section, allowing members to remain a part of Scouting
worldwide.
In 1991 as a result of the diminishing fleets, the DSS became a National
Scout Fellowship and a District of Headquarters
and became The Deep Sea Scout Fellowship
Membership was opened to former mariners and their close relatives.
Numbers now fluctuate around the 200 mark, with a wider age-range than
many Scout Fellowships.

We retain our original aims, namely:
• To enable Scouts afloat to get in touch with their
brother/sister Scouts in ports throughout the world.
• To afford young Scouts ( Now Explorers or Scout Network ) the
opportunity to continue their Scouting activities in their sea-going
profession.
• To provide an opportunity to hike and camp as Scouts, when on leave at
home or abroad.
• To be of service to all, as the opportunity offers, particularly by
instructing Cubs or Scouts, when in ports of call.
B.P's letter to members, in the Deep Sea Scout
Handbook begins:
"Damn rules! I want a jolly brotherhood through which I can get in touch
with pals of my own or other ships or at ports of call - especially
those pals who have the same Scouty ideas as I have ..............
Fellowship - Providing good Scouting for more young people.
